Quotes and Conversations I Don't Want to Forget

"Don't talk to me!!!" (In a total teenage angst sort of way)

"Ay, Dios mio!" (I think she hears this a lot).

Spontaneously in the bathtub one evening:
Ellison: "I love Robn."
Me: (Confused and wondering who on earth she could be talking about) "Do you mean Miss Robn???" (someone we know from church, who happened to often be one of the Sunday nursery volunteers in Ellison's room from the time she was 18-months-oldish until this past August when Ellison moved up into the next age group).
"Yeah. She loved me even when I would cry for my mommy and daddy. She held me when I cried."
I about cried when I heard this, and this conversation took place almost 3 months after Ellison last saw Miss Robn. The whole reason we started going to Westover Church was because Ellison needed to be exposed to other people and other children without me and Jonathan since we have no family here - we had some hefty socialization to work on. For a few months poor Ellison would sob when we would leave her in the nursery during church service, and it would just rip our hearts out. Robn and her husband would always tell us that it would get better over time, to just keep it consistent. Ellison never really talked about them, or any of the other volunteers though before. I just thought it was so profound that a little toddler would equate something along the lines of being accepted and comforted despite feeling so unpleasant. We've always been grateful for the volunteers, but this took it to a whole new level for me. I later told Robn the little conversation and tears fell down her face. She really did make a difference in a little tiny kid's life, when who would've thought it would mean that much for a quick 1.5 hrs of childcare? Isn't that the sweetest thing?

"Mom, let's have a talk."

"That was so awesome, Mom!"

"I know it hurts, I know it hurts..." (Playing hairdresser on me. I've had to tell her that many times while trying to do her hair).

" (Gasp) I need my list!" (when looking at one of those pull-out coupon displays); "Oh no! Where are my coupons?!"

"I'll read what it says, Mom: 'We are going home' . It says, 'Please get us home, God' ".

(Hands placed dramatically on hips with a sigh) "I'm frustrated!"

Going potty: "Will you go out? You guys talk. Talk to each other. Shut the door." This is said several times every single day.

"Let's take a look. (Puts hands on hips) Stand back." (as if surveying decor on a wall).

Ellison to Daddy: "I surely miss my dad."
Daddy to Ellison: "I surely miss my Ellison."
Ellison to Daddy: "Dad, I was just kidding."

"Ohhhh, I see..."

Ellison has carried on pretend conversations "with Daddy" in the car when he was out of town. She's also started hugging herself while making grunting noises, and told me she was giving God a hug.

When I was trying to pick her brain about how school went one day, she said, "I'm too tired." "You don't wanna talk about it, Ellison?" "No, I'm too tired right now."

"You almost forgot to [insert just about anything here]!". If I had a penny for every time we heard this...

"Why?" Yes, the endless repetitive question that gets asked in situations that you couldn't possibly have the answer for.

When I was cooking and stirring something one day, Ellison came up to me and put both of her hands on my butt cheeks. When I asked her what she was doing, she said, "I'll help you stir, Mom." I guess we know that my entire body must jiggle when I stir things. Nice.

"Aw, snap!" (Jonathan gets credit for this one).

After endless arguing over the it's-too-cold-for-summer-dresses-now when Ellison was devastated she couldn't wear her two fave sleeveless summer dresses Abuela made for her anymore, she got on the phone with Abuela and asked her, "Could you make me some warm dresses with sleeves?".

She tells Grandma almost every time she talks to her, "Grandma, you live way too far away."

Talking to Tinkerbell (Grandma using a high-pitched voice) on the phone: "I want to talk to Peter Pan." When Papa got on the phone as Peter Pan: "Papa, what are you doing?"

Happy Birthday, Mookie!

My, my, my... Our little Elli has been running around telling everyone, "I'm sree (three)!" while holding up 3 of her tiny little fingers. Can't believe it! Oh, our little bug is getting so old! (What does that make me?!).

I'm slightly devastated that I actually forgot to take a pic of her with our token birthday sign. :-(

Trying to describe my sweet, sassy, comical, pensive, sometimes shy, sometimes yappy little princess at the age of 3 is difficult. There is so much I could write about her, yet I can't quite find the right words.

She is all about dancing, ballet, and princesses. She is every ounce girl. The other day after I picked her up from the church class, she was talking about how she needs some boy toys (after having a conversation with her beloved Ms. Debbie about wanting "that truck" which was a bulldozer). When I asked her if she would like me to get her some boy toys, she said, "Yes, pink ones". :-)

She has a particular liking to the Disney princesses - more Belle than any other - and Tinkerbell. She has the privilege of getting to talk to Tinkerbell on the phone. You see, Ellison refuses to talk on the phone most times, unless you get crafty. So Grandma puts forth a very high-pitched dainty little voice and talks to Ellison as Tinkerbell. I think she caught on, when one day she asked to speak with Peter Pan much to our surprise, so her Grandpapa got on the phone and tried to disguise his voice without much success. Ellison asked Papa what he was doing.

She has started over the last several months doing little nervous things with her hands. She either silkies her La-La between her fingers and thumb, or if she is La-La-less, she rubs her thumbs with her fingers, to where the one looks a little rough. Or she pinches and pulls out the skin above her upper lip. It makes me think how much she internalizes a lot of the things she processes. I once read about Scorpios, "Still waters run deep". That is very evident with Ellison. She gets so excited at the anticipation of knowing she's going to see a friend of ours. Then, the few seconds before we actually see them, she starts saying, "I'm going to be shy. I don't have to say 'hi' because I'm a little bit shy. I'm going to be shy for [insert name]." But after she takes a few minutes to warm up, she is constant activity and chatter, "[Insert name], watch me!"

She loves having her nails and toenails painted, or nail tattoos in place. She is still obsessed with dresses, and particular ones at that. It's a challenge to keep her in pants for an entire day. Well, really, it just never happens. If she is dressed in pants, she likes to have them off for naptime, and then just never wants them back on again. Daddy comes home to her many a day with panties on, or the same dresses over and over. She has even started wanting to wear her pj's all day - it has brought about lots of fussing. She also loves to play dress-up with princess or Tinkerbell outfits. Her shoe fettish is still in overdrive. She notices adult shoes, "Those are beautiful shoes, Mommy" or "I would like some shoes like that, Mom" (seen on a random girl at the park). This past week she has discovered that she likes to mix-and-match shoes. They have to be the same style, but since she has a couple of colors of one style, she likes to wear one of each. She likes to have her favorite (pink, sparkly) barrette in every single day, and lately she's into wearing her headbands, too.

She still has her beloved Teddy and La-La close by, though it thankfully isn't an issue as far as getting her to go without when we go places. She is still a stuffed animal lover, and easily notices when one of the 7 are missing from her crib at night. She quickly hollers for us to come in and will say, "I can't find my Lenny!" (gasp!). Seriously, how could you tell he was missing out of your herd in the dark?!

She loves to help cook and bake, and sometimes do chores.

She's SOOOOOO independent now!!! EVERYTHING is "I want to do it all by myself". She even takes herself to the potty all by herself and can do it all, all by herself. Most times we still help her out unless she's insistent, but while she's doing her thing on the potty, she now wants privacy. She tells us, "Could you go out? I'll tell you if I need help. Go out and you guys talk. Could you go out and talk?", and many times we have to close the door behind us. In a public restroom stall, I've had to start turning my back to her while she's trying to go. Her preschool teacher told me a couple of months ago that she wants to go potty all by herself.

We have still been unsuccessful in getting her to want to sleep in a big girl bed. We haven't pushed it, but when we bring it up she gets a frown and says, "But I want my crib." But we have plans... We'll see if they work soon...

One thing we have noticed about Ellison is that she's very laid back when it comes to playing with other children. To the point where we're actually trying to get her to speak up for herself a little more. I know, she's only 3, but right now she's a little doormat. We're working on it - I suppose she can't help that she doesn't have siblings or cousins around, so she just hasn't had to deal with it much. School is good for this.

Speaking of school, Ellison does great with school. She tells me little stories of the other kids sometimes, and other times she's completely mute. There have only been 2 times that she's said she doesn't want to go to school when I've pulled up to the school, but she has never fussed or cried. I'm in love with her little art projects, songs, and prayers that she's learned.

She's definitely into pretend play now. Loves playing "pizza place" using her cash register, "Ruby Robot" (where we have to talk in robot voices), "twins", kitchen, house, and "restaurant people". We played 'restaurant people' the other evening for dinner at her little table. When it was my turn to serve her, she asked, "Restaurant people, where is your bathroom?". When I started to tell her to come so I could take her potty, she quickly corrected me, "No! Tell me where it is." She made me explain in a my "restaurant people" voice, that "it's down the hall and to the left", for which she responded, "Thanks, restaurant people!". When she's finished pretending, she tells me, "Now you're back to Mommy." She like to play "fishing", too - she's the fish and I throw a pretend line to her, then she catches it with her mouth, and I start "reeling" her in. Such a little nut. ;-)

She likes to play games - especially Candyland. She throws her hands up exclaiming, "I wonned! I wonned!". And she adores doing puzzles - she does so good with them!

She loves her some lipstick (she has about 20), and by the time she's done with it her mouth looks like a candle.

Every single morning the very first thing she says is, "I'm hungry," irregardless of whether or not it's true, and she quickly decompensates if you don't get her some milk and some cereal. She's SO not a morning person. Even from naps, it's hard for her to wake up, and you have to ease her back into the awake-world, or else we all end up miserable. The only times she wakes up completely happy are when Mommy and Daddy are both home when she wakes.

She tries to speak a little Spanish, which cracks us up, because it's complete jibberish.

Her fave foods are anything that she constitutes as a "treat", and she still loves pasta, anything sweet (I get blamed for this), cheese, milk, blueberries, and "chicken meat" or "ham meat", which are specifically cold cuts. Thankfully, she eats good veggies and fruits, but when it comes to meat, so won't even TRY it unless it's her cold cuts, and they have to be rolled up. There are so many foods she used to eat that she simply refuses to try again now. I feel like we rotate through the same foods daily. It gets so old!

She's still taking a nap in the afternoon, and I'm dreading the days ahead when it goes away. She sleeps pretty well at night, though she goes through cycles if there's a change like Daddy being gone. Going to bed is a chore, and a very long drawn-out process. By the time she takes a bath, brushes teeth, dries her hair, gets jammies on, reads a book, prays, sings, rocks, calls for us 536 times, it feels exhausting. We need to start the process by 2pm to get her to sleep by 8pm. Another little bedtime quirk, is that she has to have tissues under her pink pillow (the one next to her) every night. She makes sure she has at least one every night after she requests that we bring her a drink and blow her nose (even if it's not running). Anything to stall, I tell ya!

Though Ellison likes some TV shows and a couple of movies in particular (she just discovered the new Tinkerbell movie and the Little Mermaid, and interestingly she was pretty attached to a real Russian ballerina documentary), she's not as into TV as she has been in the past, which is good. She'll watch it if it's on, but she likes a variety of shows now, and doesn't really ask for it. Even in the car, she used to ask for the DVD player the second we were leaving the garage, but most of our trips around town are DVD-less now.

For her 3 year check-up, Ellison weighed in at 28 lbs, and is 36 1/2 inches; both are in the 50th percentile. Everything is looking A-OK. I still cringe when I think of how her health status could have been at this point had the diabetes thing lasted. So much to celebrate and thank God for on her 3rd birthday...

Well, that's a lot of our little girl. I'm sure I'll be thinking of more Elli-isms to add later. But I better get to keeping up with posts, since that's a struggle lately!

Our Little Dancing Queen

Ellison's little dream came to fruition yesterday - she started dance classes! She was SOOO excited. We figured we'd better give it a shot since we hear "Demi plie" and "Pada bore" (I know I'm spelling those wrong) coming frequently out of her mouth. We decided to start her at Nan's School of Dance since she kept saying she wanted to do tap also. It's a class for 3-4 year olds that does ballet, tap, and a little bit of tumbling. Ellison's little friend, Isabella Tooley, is in her class, and showed her the ropes yesterday since everyone else has been doing it for a couple months (we had to wait until she turned 3). Isabella took her by the hand and led the way - so cute.

Ellison loves her new dancing attire, and asks to wear it all the time. Thankfully, we can set some limits with her dance outfits and shoes. :-)

Isabella and Ellison

Waiting to go into their class.

Since the class is after Jonathan gets home from work, the both of us went and watched through the one-way window the whole time. It was so adorable to watch! She was picking up some of the steps and doing what the teacher told them. A few times a couple of little girls would get distracted and run over to the window (though they couldn't see us) or to the mirrors, or one would lay on the floor, and a couple of them (Ellison included) would follow suit. But they'd all quickly scamper back to where they were supposed to be. When she came out of class, she had the biggest grin on her face and said, "I did good!".

After class yesterday we headed over to Pastabilities to celebrate our friend, Michael's, birthday. This is the same Michael whom Ellison used to call, "My Michael". The infatuation had worn off, but I'm afraid it's coming back again. The whole way over to the restaurant Ellison was saying, "I'm going to show Michael my outfit and he will say, 'That's a cute little outfit!' ", or "I'm going to show Michael my piggytails!". Michael likes to tease Jonathan that he's going to take Ellison to the Father-Daughter Dance.

African Children's Choir

We took Ellison to see the African Children's Choir that was performing at our church, Westover Church, on Sunday evening. There was a great turnout, and it was so touching to see these beautiful children who were orphaned, with such harsh backgrounds, just have pure joy and love in their heart for Jesus. The African Children's Choir is now a huge organization focused on helping out the impoverished children. These children go on to become doctors, lawyers, teachers, nurses, and they give back to the community they came from. I'm not doing the organization justice by trying to describe it in my simple terms, but we really enjoyed the evening. Ellison was dancing in the aisle the first few songs, and clapping along.

Daddy's Home!

It was nearly impossible to get this child down to sleep after such an exciting evening. Trick-or-treating, Daddy coming home, candy, surprises from Daddy's trip. Ellison was wound up! Here she was trying on Daddy's new hat. I wish she'd have hidden it on him...

Trick-Or-Treating

And finally, the last of the 2009 Halloween festivities. Time to trick-or-treat.

Ellison with Alyssa, just before all the doorbell ringing began.
It was a warm, muggy evening. The first couple of houses Ellison was shy, but then when she realized she was getting some treats out of the deal, she kicked it into high gear! This girl was lit up! She would very animatedly tell me, "Let's go to another one, Mom!". Soon she was running up the driveways ahead of me, saying, "Trick-or-treat" and "Thank you!". She was even asked to pose for a couple of pics, and she happily obliged.
The best part of the evening came when Daddy arrived home from the UK, and literally met us on the street at the Mr. Fern's house, aka "The Halloween House". I've mentioned his house in other blog posts from long ago - the house that's always decorated up for the holidays. Ellison asks to drive by Mr. Fern's house every day we start down the street in the van. Michael and Ethan met up with us, too, so the 5 of us hit a few houses before heading home.

Halloween Playdate

On Friday morning, we got to go over to the Holcombs for a Halloween Playdate. It was nice to see our little friends in costume, since we normally wouldn't get to - great idea, Cameron!

Zoo Boo Bash 2009

Since we were fatherless, and Baity was fatherless one evening, too, Megan and I decided to take the girls to the annual Zoo Boo Bash at the Natural Science Center. It was a gorgeous evening to be there. The girls got some candy after playing some games, we checked out the animals, and even took in a Halloween laser light show in the Omnisphere. The girls had fun, mostly picking out which candy to eat next.

Waiting for the doors to open

I cannot believe the girls were not scared of this mask - I even think it's icky. The guy was in the meerkat exhibit, throwing candy out to the kids. He kept giving the girls a thumbs-up. Dude, you're thumb may be happy, but you're mask is telling me you're going to have me as an appetizer.

The sweet girls waving to the creature. Huh.

Even the female anteater was festive.

Ellison to Baity: "You gonna finish that?"

Trying Sour Patch Kids for the first time. :-) She kept eating them. She just kept repeating, "They're sour, but then they turn sweet".
After the sugar rush, the four of us ordered take-out and ate over to Megan and Baity's house, to round out our fun girls-only night.

Moody Dorothy

I think Dorothy was about to start her period. I was so anxious to get some cute little fall pics out in the front yard in the beautiful weather when we got home from preschool. Well, Ellison decided that was not on her agenda. She has a nasty mom who pulled her away from the alluring fun of playing inside the mini-van.

See, isn't it cute to get pics by the jack-o-lantern???
Oh, Dorothy...
See, I can be just as persistent as she can. ;-)

Ah, that's better. After having a picnic lunch in the mini-van (you think I'm kidding?), she was happy as a clam. I can't say I've ever plopped into the back of a mini-van to eat a meal before, but it's happened again since this momentous occasion I speak of. After spotting Ms. Joan and Mr. Bill next door, Ellison was all smiles and ready to be Dorothy again.
Ms. Joan, aka "Noni", is Ellison's North Carolina grandma. They spoil her rotten!!! They are SOOOO good to her - always giving her things, buying her things, and they just get a kick out of her. Joan's always calling Ellison "my little girlfriend". They are such awesome people and neighbors! We love them.

Elli was completely entertained picking berries off the bush in our front yard. When I asked her what she was doing, she said, "I'm picking berries." Oh. Yeah. Now I know what to do if we get really bored at home ever.

Preschool Halloween Party

Halloween Festivity #2: the classroom party. I've always wanted to be a fly on the wall in that room - they are all so darn cute at this age. I'm sure the teachers don't feel the same way by now. When I arrived they were all in a little circle singing festive little songs with motions. I couldn't believe Ellison stayed in her spot as I walked in. I did get a sweet little smile, though, followed by her embarrassed I'm-trying-really-hard-not-to-smile smile.
